Awards

I have had several photos shortlisted for awards, one for the Wildlife Photographer of the year, and 7 in different rounds of Amateur Photographer of the Year. Please find them below along with a short description.

The first is from a safari in Namibia. This was photographed shortly after sunrise at a watering hole, and I was fortunate enough to be approached by some zebra. They were incredibly skittish and the noise of my shutter was enough to spook them. I entered this photo into the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition by the Natural History Museum, and made it to the final round.

The second is from the same trip to Namibia. This photo was actually on my first night on safari in Namibia. We were on a game drive with others in the lodge, and as we got close to sunset, my wife spotted a gang of meerkats running across the sand. Our guide drove closer, and then turned the engine off, hoping they would pop out. I asked if I could get out to shoot lower to the ground, and as I crept towards the front of the car to peer round, one, then two Meerkats popped their curious heads up, and I pressed the shutter. This photo was shortlisted in the ‘Animal Kingdom’ category of the Amateur Photographer of the Year 2024 (APOY) competition.

The third photo is also from the APOY 2024 Competition, this time in the ‘People’ category. I was inspired to try some high key photography utilising my softboxes and flashes, and loved the contrast that came out of this.

The fourth image is from the Isle of Skye at night time. This image is a composite of three stitched together, all taken a few minutes apart. One to capture the stars as best I could, one of the foreground, and then a final image where I walked around the Fairy Glenn triggering my speedlight every step to light up the foreground. I love the magical effect this brings to the already mystical location. This image was shortlisted in the “Dusk to Dawn” category of the APOY 2024.

The fifth image is from the APOY 2025 “Black & White” category, and is from an action shot taken of a top UK hurdler using flash photography to freeze motion and give a unique image of sport.

The next image is from the People & Portraits round of APOY 2025, and is one taken of my wife in her Invictus Games 2025 kit.

The next is from APOY 2025 ‘Landscapes’, and features the same location as a previously shortlisted image, on the Isle of Skye Fairy Glenn, but at sunset looking west, rather than at night looking north.

The most recent shortlisted image is from APOY “Night and Low Light”. In 2024 I entered landscape images, but this year I focused my entries on portraits, and was very pleased when the below image was shortlisted!
